The General's Daughter
Director: Simon West
Cast: John Travolta, James Wood, James Cromwell, Clarence Williams
There are only three way of doing things: The right way, the wrong
way and the army way.
In a world where nobody asks and nobody tells,
where the Army likes to keep its secrets buried
and its dirty laundry unaired, the daughter of a
popular general is found brutally murdered and no
one wants to touch the case. But certain secrets cannot remain hidden
forever when a tenacious investigator begins digging for answers only to find much more than
he bargained for.
A movie starring John Travolta is worth at least 3 ticks; not
difficult to see that I am a "Travolta" fan rite?
Anyway, John Travolta reprise his goody, smart alec (no connotations)
type character. He played a military investigator Paul Brenner who was on hand
to investigate a military crime where the General Campbell's daughter,
was found stark naked, tied or pinned onto the ground, alleged to
be gang raped. On the surroundings were footprints of the
suspects. As Travolta's character investigate
deeper into this whole issue, he discovered a conspiracy in the army
which he had never expected. Faced with the dilemma of uncovering
the truth which will implicate people in the army and threaten the very
code of honour or to fight the very
nature of his conscience, how will he choose?
My Say
First of all, I believe and sincerely believe that the
SAF will not be in this situation. Maybe the pride and honour at
stake is seriously in doubt, but I believe that the organisation is
righteous and aboveboard in their dealings. Remember right behind
them is the almighty PAP, what can they do rite?
As usual I must say that Travolta put on a convincing
performance as the righteous and almost too real to be true
investigator. But come mon, this is the movie, and he is the
lead. As in all Travolta recent movie, he play the guy and the
only good guy. James Wood made a convincing appearance as the
Colonel Roger Moore, who tried to tell Travolta what was really
happening. James Cromwell put on a subdued performance as the
general, but indeed this role is not really a showcase of his
talents. However the show belong to Travolta, he seems to fill the
big screen, (okay beside stage appearance, there is also the paunch) and
all attention seems to be on him all the time. Being an Academy
Award winner do make the world of a difference. Perhaps the show
should have been renamed "The Investigator"
+
(half a tick more for Travolta)
